Pokemon 2000 soundtrack (album cover)Throughout history politicians and other public figures have often used dramatic quotes to enrich their messages to the world at large.

Whether it has been John F. Kennedy citing Dante or Abraham Lincoln openly reciting Shakespeare, many famous lines have been used to reiterate feelings from the past in more modern terms. And now in 2011, prospective Republican nominee for president Herman Cain has done his part to keep this venerable tradition alive.

However Cain’s choice of subject matter for his quote was a little different than most.

Before ending his battered bid for the 2012 presidency on Saturday, Cain first decided to share a quote from a source that, while appearing scattershot and obtuse, no doubt also holds a special place in the former candidate’s heart.

I speak, of course, of the Pokemon Movie.

While Cain’s take on the words “Life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it’s never easy when there’s so much on the line,” falls a little short of singer Donna Summer’s original rendition, the sentiment no doubt remains true. And perhaps above all else, the usage of lyrics from a popular children’s cartoon that is set in a fantasy world populated by weird creatures is a fitting epitaph for a campaign that, at times, also seemed beset by a mystical force all of its own.

Maybe Herman Cain just wasn’t ready for a job that didn’t involve groping or anime. But hey, America’s loss is the entertainment world’s gain. I’m sure Nintendo the Pokemon’s parent company would welcome Cain with open arms. Just keep him away from Pikachu. Too many sparks would fly there for sure.
