It’s a good time to be a Pixies fan. The last year brought the first new music in ages from the seminal late ‘80s alternative rockers, and now the band is embarking on a tour to bring the music to live audiences.

That would be good enough news alone, but Valley fans can count themselves especially fortunate, and not just because the band more or less qualifies as a former Valley group via UMass-Amherst. Last Monday, the Iron Horse Entertainment Group announced one of its most interesting shows since Beck kicked off a tour at the Iron Horse Music Hall. This Monday, Jan. 13, the Pixies likewise take the stage at the Calvin for what they’ve said will be a lower-key warmup for a big tour. Bassist Kim Deal will be replaced for the tour by Paz Lenchantin.
