Most college towns take a while to get up on the weekend, but for 38 years, from May until November, the Amherst Farmers' Market, at the Spring Street parking lot on the Common, has been waking the town up bright and early on Saturday mornings. The wealth of diversity in what's offered and the joy with which produce is served up has earned this market the reputation of a weekly festival. The heavily organic products include over 100 varieties of heriloom tomatoes, Asian vegetables from the Chang Farm, honey, maple syrup, eggs, roasted chestnuts, bedding plants, fig trees, tropicals, brooms cheese, baked goods, natural fruit popsicles served up by the "Popsicle lady," elephant garlic, flower bougets, mums... you get the idea. Many weekends there are events with live music, lecturers or cooking demonstrations. this year organizers are working to enable resellers to accept food stamps electronically.
