“AFSC as an international organization has been around since 1917, when it started with folks registering conscientious objectors to World War I,” says Jeff Napolitano, program coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee in Western Massachusetts. “In 1947 we won the Nobel Peace Prize for our work in postwar Europe. The Western Massachusetts program just celebrated our 45th birthday, after being founded in 1968 in the basement of the venerable Frances Crowe, who was talking young men out of the draft to Vietnam.” The local office, Napolitano explains, “has since moved from Frances’ basement to downtown Northampton.” Internationally, AFSC is best known for its commitment to “the Quaker values of peace and integrity,” Napolitano continues. “Here in the Valley, [we’re] known as a resource for a host of social justice issues, from mobilization against the spectre of war in Syria to our collaboration as a member of Springfield No One Leaves to addressing military recruitment in local high schools to [training] dozens of college interns who work in our office every semester.”
