Parham hails from Chicago, IL and attended college at
Washington University (St. Louis), later earning her doctorate from Columbia
University in English and Comparative Literature. She is currently an assistant
professor at Amherst College, teaching classes in African-American literary and
cultural studies, American popular culture, and Anglophone literatures after
colonialism. Currently, Marisa is completing a book manuscript entitled Haunting and Displacement in African American Literature and Culture (Routledge 2008). She is also a board member at the Amherst Cinema Arts Center, manages the Cypher & Syllable online
writers collective, and is author of The African American Student's Guide to College (Random House, 1998).
