Last April I succombed and bought some chicks. At first they kept me up at night because I made the mistake of keeping them in our bedroom: I was worried they’d get cold. A few months later they were living in the garage.

Now they have survived a winter and seem perfectly happy in their coop and run. Admittedly, Tiny likes to wander a bit. But, you know, she’s got it going on.
All except for broody. Some hens go “broody” occasionally. They decide that they will sit and raise some chicks. Broody decides this at least once a month.
But we don’t have a rooster. This hen will sit in an empty nest and make threatening clucks and growls at anyone who comes near. Often there isn’t even an egg under her. Stupid bird.
Watching her this afternoon I got to thinking about chicken ancestry. I’m trying to imagine a broody tyrannosaurus rex.

Here are some hens drinking milk. Think of a T rex doing the same. Spooky.
