In Russia, the circus has long been a higher art form, one nearly as revered as ballet. Due to Catherine the Great’s patronage, the circus was quickly woven into Russia’s cultural tapestry, and highly competitive state circus schools were eventually established. The folks in The Moscow Circus are driven by this grand history, and attempt to retain its excellence in their current tour, titled “A Russian Folk Fair,” in which the stage is a traditional proscenium. Clowns and performers acrobatically traverse aisles and foyers, combining high art with all the whimsical delights expected of the circus.
