The genre of Indian miniature painting feels quintessentially Indian, with its intricate brushwork, elaborate decoration, brilliant color and lyrical storytelling. The style’s appeal is apparent in Rachel Hankinson’s exhibit Entering India: Fusion Indian Miniature Paintings at the Burnett Gallery in the Jones Library in Amherst. An English artist living in Amherst, Hankinson traveled to India, where she studied miniature painting with master B.P. Sharma. Her subsequent work is a symbolic fusion of Western and Indian techniques that illustrates both her journey to the subcontinent of India and her inner evolution—her journey into the “undiscovered continent” described by Emily Dickinson.
