The Republicans say stuff they think will be hip among "the youth," and end up sounding like focus-grouped Sith Nerds.
First, John McCain and W employ nonexistent usage to prove how online-savvy they are–McCain talks about "a Google," and Bush (some time back) referred to "the Google" and "the Internets." Now a new Obama attack line has emerged. It’s apparently supposed to imply that Barack Obama is a gay elitist without touching on any sensitive racial issues. But the term they’re employing, "fancy lad," is a) utterly insipid and ineffective, b) absurdly antiquarian, and c) only saw extensive usage in Chris Elliot’s Cabin Boy. Granted, I love Cabin Boy, proving that I’m in a very small minority (but I’m hip, baby!), but can’t they do better than to echo a line delivered in that fine film by a cackling David Letterman (who also delivered the line above, "Would you like to buy a monkey?")?
Perhaps the Obama campaign should respond by calling McCain "a bally scofflaw" and make fun of how he wears his jodhpurs all wrinkly and never polishes his monocle.
