Hair like Jesus wore it. Hallelujah! I adore it!
Hair, the hit mega-hit Broadway musical of the 1960s that defined the genre “rock musical,” begins with an introduction to a group of hippies who refer to themselves as “The Tribe.” The group lives in NYC in the Age of Aquarius — a confusing time of political, sexual and civil rights revolution beset by the Vietnam War. The central conflict of the play is whether leader Claude will dodge the draft like his friends or join the military and ship off to Vietnam in conflict with his pacifist philosophy, but right on with conservative America. The conflict the “Flower Children” face is one that’s still relevant today as America continues to be embroiled in conflicts abroad.
Hair, The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical: April 22 at 7 p.m., April 23 at 7 p.m., and April 24 at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. American International College, Griswold Theater, 1000 State St., Springfield.
