Prelude to a Cow
Bovines of all stripes and spots take center stage during Brattleboro’s annual Strolling of the Heifers this weekend, but Saturday morning’s parade is only one part of this green party’s platform. On the evening before, the town closes the central block of Main Street to traffic to make room for food and craft vendors, live entertainment, music, dancing, and fun for the whole family. Not only are stores and restaurants open, but the festival also coincides with Gallery Walk — Brattleboro’s monthly first-Friday open gallery night — so visitors can stop into openings and take a look at new art exhibits. Inside the River Garden, local celebrity food judges will decide the winners of the Great American Bread Recipe Contest, while the back area of the building offers the third annual free tasting of specialty spirits and beers distilled in Vermont, including products from WhistlePig whiskey, 14th Star Brewing Company, Caledonia Spirits, and more. The only thing we can’t promise is a return visit from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders — he seems to be a little busy these days.
Brattleboro Friday Night Street Festival: Friday, June 3, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Downtown Brattleboro. (802) 258-7070, strollingoftheheifers.com.
