The mighty Deerfield River runs 73 miles from southern Vermont to Greenfield, where it marries the Connecticut River. Dozens of spots along its shores and in its watery depth offer New Englanders and visitors opportunities for camping and other recreational and sporting activities. Every year, the village of Shelburne Falls—through which the river runs—celebrates the Deerfield River and its watershed with RiverFest, featuring educational displays, art, crafts, book and plant sales and more. The theme for this 20th annual RiverFest is “Celebrating a Working Watershed,” and standouts include trolley car rides, a petting zoo, tranquil rafting (pictured below), the rowdy “Frog and Flower Parade” (a scene from last year’s parade is pictured at right), and performances by the Green River Band, Ballet Renversé and PiTi Theatre. RiverFest is presented by the Deerfield River Watershed Association.
