On Unit7's website, a curious collision of fonts occurs. "Unit7" sleekly scrawls across the top with that arcade/skating rink style that rose to prominence around the late '70s. Right next to it, however, you'll find a bunch of Art Nouveau letters spelling out "speakeasy music for the 21st century."
The band may have grown out of more of a funk and rock past—it includes former members of Stash and Trailer Park, among others—but the "speakeasy" label certainly holds true. There's a healthy dose of rocking rhythmic swagger going on, but the tunes also borrow heavily from swing and R&B.
When they take over the Black Moon Lounge on New Year's Eve (along with Dick Moulding and the Luminz Dancers), it seems certain that a dance-worthy party will ensue, no matter what decade precisely the sounds hail from.
Dec. 31, 7 p.m.-1 a.m., Black Moon Music Lounge, 37 State St., Belchertown, (413) 323-0013.
