Stephen Katz does some unusual things with his cello—he bows it, he strums it, and he has even been known to dance with it. Add to such innovations the practice of building orchestral textures with looping, and you get an experience far from the usual staid solo concert.
Katz is musical director of the high-flying Wire Monkey Dance troupe, and has made a habit of collaborating with dancers. As Seen & Heard, Katz and the late dancer/monologuist B.J. Goodwin used movement and cello to act out dramas onstage.
This week, Katz fills the West Cummington Church with sound, not far from his Haydenville home.
June 1, 7 p.m., $15, West Cummington Church, Route 9, Cummington.
