“Look at what you can do when you move a few cars,” cries Page Bridgens to passersby in front of Thorne’s in downtown Northampton. “Instead of endless hunks of gas-burning metal, you’ve got free bike repair, free live music, a place to hang out and meet nice people and information about important local issues! So what would you rather have? All these good things, or a few junky cars?”
Page, equal parts activist and enthusiast, is an ally of The Pedal People, who are allied with the Bike Lab, which has a lot of friends in the Green movement. Together they rented a few prime weekend parking spaces for Parking Day September 22 (www.parkingday.org) for an experiment in alternative, auto-reduced reality.
