In November, Will Meyer, the Advocate’s Basemental columnist and an all-around proactive guy, hopped in a sedan with two friends and drove to the front lines of the show support for protesters attempting to block development of the Dakota Access Pipeline, a $3.7 billion project by Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners to build a 1,200 mile oil pipeline from North Dakota to Illinois. The pipeline is expected to move up to 570,000 barrels of oil daily — much of that drawn from the state’s Bakken Shale, a place that holds what many assume to be billions of gallons of oil that can be recovered through fracking.
