Springfield could use a lot of new year’s wishes. Most on my mind today is a desire for the area’s mainstream, established media outlets to attain a greater vision for the importance of the city’s centrality to the region.

Instead of perpetually hobbling the city’s residents with images and superficial glimpses of our disasters and embarrassments great and small, it would be great to see a sure-footed, grounded approach to some of our problems and challenges, humbly balanced against our local scale strivings and successes.

One look at yesterday’s editorial in the Hartford Courant made me long to see media staff based in Springfield capable of putting together such an informed, extensive and encouraging city wish list based both on practical reality as well as in a vision of the city as the economic and cultural engine for a region.

The media do mediate, after all, and if their glasses are fogged—for whatever reason—it impairs perception for all of us. I think the city longs to see itself accurately reflected, but it also hopes for inspiration within reach. What are your wishes for Springfield?
