Mayor Charles Ryan and Police Commissioner Edward Flynn are set to hold a joint press conference today at City Hall, Room 220, 3:30 pm. Wouldn’t you love to hear it live? We’ll have to wait until the 5:30 news at best, or maybe a reporter for the Republican will find a way to sneak it into the breaking news blog on MassLive.com.

The topic is the police department. That could mean almost anything.

Update: I half-expected this press conference to include the owner(s) of Kennedy Fried Chicken on Main Street, where a shooting in the wee hours of January 1 left one man dead and several injured. According to CBS3 news, after a cease-and-desist order was delivered from the city to the business, demanding that they close shop due to numerous city violations, the place remained open for some hours until police showed up. (CBS3 also reports on a shooting at a Holyoke Kennedy Fried Chicken over the weekend.)

But maybe this press conference has nothing to do with any of that.

Update: Just in via the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association, the City Council‘s public safety committee has scheduled a meeting at City Hall, Room 200, Friday, January 5 at 11:00 am. On the agenda, according to chairman Councilor Domenic Sarno:

Discussion of recent homicide at Kennedy Fried Chicken and the number of police calls to that business during the last two years. What are recommendations to Kennedy Fried Chicken management for best business practices going forward.

Also according to the memo, "All interested parties are invited to attend."

Update: CBS3 apparently broke the news (in the online news world, anyway), which is that Springfield is getting 23 new police officers.
