It’s become quite clear–indeed, for many of us it was never unclear–that the war in Iraq has nothing whatsoever to do with 9/11. Even our Dear Leader finally admitted it. To say that we’re fighting the wrong war in the wrong place to counteract terrorism is easy. To make it clear just how incredibly short of the mark Bush has fallen is a bit more of a challenge.
Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) has been angry with the Bush administration’s wrongness for a long time, basically since he served on the Intelligence Committee and saw behind closed doors the redacted 27 pages from a congressional inquiry into 9/11-related intelligence failures. In a book that’s about to hit the shelves, Graham reveals the gist of what the Bush administration kept us from seeing: that two of the 9/11 hijackers received direct support from Saudi intelligence. It should not be forgotten that Osama bin Laden is himself a Saudi and a supporter of the Saudi extremist brand of Islam called Wahhabism.
Graham says the connection "would draw a direct line between the terrorists and the government of Saudi Arabia, and trigger an attempted coverup by the Bush administration."
This is a very big, hairy deal. We probably did have some business in Afghanistan, though we bungled that one mightily and have now been fought back to a draw by the Taliban (thanks for covering that one, mainstream media). But Iraq? We seem to have far more business south of Iraq, in Saudi Arabia.
Even a cursory examination of the ties between the Saudi royals and the Bush clan reveals precisely why we won’t be addressing that thorny problem anytime soon. The specter of Bandar Bush comes to mind, the Saudi royal who’s so close to the Bushes he snagged an honorary moniker.
In how many ways must it be demonstrated that this bunch of clowns make Nixon look like a common thug? Is there anything worthy of impeachment anymore except stupid sexual behavior?
