A second annual celebration tomorrow at the Mason Square branch library (pictured) will include an announcement of the results of the "kids’ vote" on the best location for a new branch library in the neighborhood. The gathering is slated for Wednesday, April 18 starting at 4:00 pm, and will include a press conference. The Mason Square branch library is currently at 765 State Street in Springfield. The press release is below:

Mason Square Library Advisory Committee to announce results of children’s vote

Please join us on Wednesday, April 18 when we announce the results of the kids’ vote on the best place for the new Mason Square Library.

While the Mayor’s site selection committee examines a number of possible locations for a new branch library in Mason Square, we, of the Mason Square Library Advisory Committee, are asking children in area schools to vote on what they think that perfect location ought to be.

Children vote April 9 through 13 at five schools: DeBerry, Ells, Homer, Rebecca Johnson, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter. The school librarians in each school are overseeing the vote. We hope this effort will make the children, their parents and teachers aware of the process that is taking place and give them a chance to speak out for libraries. Anyone (of any age) also had a chance to vote on the Mason Square Branch Library.

We will count the ballots and announce the results at our second annual event at the Mason Square Library on Wednesday afternoon, April 18, 2007 at 4:00 pm. The results will also be presented to the Mason Square Library Site Committee for consideration when they make their recommendations to the Mayor.

The Mason Square Library Advisory Committee is a joint effort of the five neighborhood councils that surround Mason Square, and represents a population of approximately 25,000 citizens. The MSLAC was formed in 2004, after the Mason Square Library was sold by the Springfield Museums to the Urban League.

MSLAC meets on the last Thursday of every month at the Mason Square Health Center from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, and continues to work toward restoring full library services to the people of the community.
