As some of you know, I bought a bar (actually, a building with a bar downstairs and an apartment up, and actually, not just I but I and three partners) here in Turners Falls, MA. The project has shifted, recently from planning and demo to execution, to rebuilding a building. I have zero experience as either a business- or handy- man. Every day I work all day doing the kind of work that I always have thought was just not the kind of work I could do, not the kind of man I could be, the kind of man who makes sturdy physical objects. It is bringing up lots of fascinating things to discuss this here space. But every day after work I come home and eat large portions of meat and potatoes and then collapse. Normally a zillion-time-a-day email checker, I didn’t go online until 10pm yesterday. Sometimes, after dinner, I rise to scrub myself clean, or watch the basketball teams I like lose on TV, but that’s about it. But soon, very soon, I will write in detail about the odd changes I see in myself as a man in the world now that I a.) own a new business in a small town, and b.) I’m building that business with my own, increasingly calloused, and correspondingly more learned hands. I hope you’ll stay tuned and forgive my recent invisibility. Above is a picture of my dog Bo self-squeezed into the cat’s bed, so you’ll like me better for having such a cute pet.
