Our nation is a lovely experiment in the ideals of the Enlightenment. Our constitution was drafted with Article 6–no religious tests to hold office–in place for a reason. The early American theocrats didn’t like the Constitution, seeing it as elevating humanity at the expense of God. They’re still pissed off, 200-some-odd years later.
Of course, the Constitution protects all religious expression equally, thus preserving the right of theocrats to believe in theocracy. But they don’t get that suppression of those who disagree with them only hurts their cause, too, and apparently they never will get that. Because, you see, they’re right. And that’s what makes it different.
Of our grand, mostly successful experiment in self-government, Reverend Huckabee says this:
"[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it’s a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that’s what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards."
God save us from theocratic maniacs. Please.
