With looming re-votes, superdelegates and the wild speculation over the superior fielder of 3 a.m. phone calls, it may, in fact, be months before the political landscape settles.
As evidenced by kudos for their recently released Mission Control CD and placement on “ones to watch lists” in Rolling Stone, Maxim, People and New York Daily News as well as appearances on the Conan O’Brien and David Letterman shows, it appears that all facets of entertainment media are unanimous in their support of party/garage rockers from Georgia The Whigs.
“What [we try to do] is capture the spirit of old-fashioned rock and roll,” drummer Julian Doro says of the sonic philosophy behind the up-and-coming trio. “Everybody has their purpose in the songs… the bass does a lot of melodies… and no one is sitting there backing up what someone else is doing. Hopefully that comes across.”
At the time of this writing, Doro and bandmates Parker Gispert and Tim Deaux were enjoying no less than four performance slots on the now internationally renowned South By Southwest festival in Texas. This Friday, March 21, they’ll come clear across the fruited plains to perform at Pearl Street in Northampton with fellow Georgians Drive By Truckers.
Meanwhile, in the “opportunistic audio” department, Suzanne Williams of Six Flags New England checked in to report that her theme park is currently searching for “family friendly” musical acts in all genres to perform at the new Live & Local series it plans to host this summer.
“It will run from July 6 through Aug. 31,” the affable public relations assistant adds. “And while there is no pay, bands will get lots of exposure via our park signage, website and e-newsletter.”
All acts selected will perform two sets, at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and are responsible for bringing any equipment they may need for an outdoor performance. For more information or to submit a link to your act’s electronic press kit, email: hclark@sftp.com. The snail mail address for traditional press kits is Attn: Heather Clark, Six Flags New England, 1623 Main St., Agawam, MA 01001.
While no one has gone as far as to concretely assert that Eddie Van Halen is running with the devil—i.e., his personal demons, including alcohol and other substance abuse—again, the Van Halen camp has confirmed that the exceptional axeman (who, in fairness, has also had a bout with tongue cancer and has received a hip transplant) is “currently under doctors’ care” for an unspecified medical condition. Swept up in the wake of the announcement—and the ensuing quest for said physicians to “continue medical tests” to “define a course of treatment”—are some 19 scheduled tour dates, including a March 26 stop originally slated for the Mohegan Sun. While ticket refunds are available at the original point of purchase, show organizers did maintain that, as of press time, all shows affected by the situation would be rescheduled.
And speaking of the “Sun” and runs, Billy Joel has a nice one going himself. The piano man recently signed on for an eighth show at Mohegan Sun on June 28. And with the news comes a new Billy Joel record… sort of. No, the multiple Grammy winner hasn’t re-entered the studio to record his first pop offering in more than a decade. Rather, this is a record of distinction, as the subsequent scramble to procure tickets for show eight cemented Joel sole ownership of “the most consecutive indoor shows sold out in the history of Connecticut concerts” title.
