The precise control of the abdominal muscles and the independently operating hips of belly dancers collaborate in a set of movements that can seem more foreign than even the mysterious strains of the oud (Middle Eastern stringed instrument) to which they dance. During a special gala performance, these baffling moves are showcased by the Crescent Dancers, a troupe who have been shimmying through the Pioneer Valley for over 30 years. These local women have adopted special names and personas along with the veils and bejeweled tops famous in their craft.
Recently Rose Champagne, a former Crescent Dancer and rising star in the belly dance world, passed away due to complications from brain cancer. In her honor, the Crescent Dancers present an evening featuring a "shimmy-thon," a Turkish spoon dance and a live snake dance (and traditional costumes for sale). The Crescent Dancers also unveil a newly choreographed piece. Proceeds benefit Hospice; reservations are required.
