Although it’s illegal to dig for war artifacts in France, items found above ground are free for the taking. In the Argonne forest and surrounding the village of St. Mihiel, relics from World War I are still scattered on the landscape.
A sample of these wartime remnants, including bullets, shells, a canteen and a sword bayonet, is on display in The First World War, an exhibit organized by Professor Ed Klekowski. The professor, also a filmmaker, has two documentary films in production: Yankees Fight the Kaiser and Model Ts to Glory.
