I see this ad about three times a night now that the NBA playoffs are on (I’m an NBA junkie). The first hundred or so times it just annoyed me, and then last night I got fascinated. Earlier, while annoyed, I thought it was homophobic and just dumb. Mincing little Cuba is mocked for his love of Michael (more so as well in an earlier ad in which Cuba grabs and won’t let go of the great hero). But this one is more interesting in that Michael has left Cuba a basket of underwear with a cute (romantic?) little note. Cuba ends up being the only one ridiculed, the ladies (also a strange bunch – has MJ reached the stage where only middle-aged and elderly white women want his autograph?) aghast at Cuba’s I’m wearing your underwear! shout. But the look on MJ’s face suggests a greater depth. What Cuba and MJ have (but that Cuba wants to shout to the skies) is supposed to be strictly on the down low. Michael, disgusted and protecting his manhood, lets his little man twist in the wind. And then poor Cuba gets startled, reacting very effeminately, by a screaching monkey creature. The undies that dare not speak their name. Wait til we get our Hanes off you. And then there’s this.
