InterMedia is a fitting title for an exhibit of work by Julie Lapping Rivera and Ani Gonzalez-Rivera. Lapping Rivera—an art teacher at Wildwood Elementary school in Amherst—constructs her autobiographical images using a variety of techniques, including painting, drawing, printmaking and collage. Gonzalez-Rivera depends on photography and mixed media to build images that seek to interrupt the typical relationship between viewer and object. Indeed, his “Bible Pictures: The Third Day of Creation” (pictured at left, below) depicts a cross-armed figure with the posture and attitude of a pondering museum patron.
This exhibit isn’t all about the art—proceeds will benefit a new Creative Arts Fund for Amherst A Better Chance (ABC). ABC prepares promising African-American, Latino, Asian and Native American students for college and beyond.
July 2-30. Reception: July 3, 5-8 p.m., The Burnett Gallery at the Jones Library, 43 Amity St., Amherst, www.joneslibrary.org, www.amherstabetterchance.org.
