The human mania for categorizing sometimes meets its match in music. Pierre Bensusan is a perfect case in point. The French-Algerian guitarist's music has gathered quite a number of strange descriptions, but is perhaps best captured by the term "chamber jazz."
His playing, stunning in its technical virtuosity, mixes elements of Celtic, classical and jazz, plus folk traditions from all over the globe. The result is a complex, evocative interplay of melody and rhythm, at once hypnotic and engaging, and quite unlike the playing of most acoustic guitarists.
This week, you can catch his masterful stylings in Brattleboro.
