Don't know what a Puritan tiger beetle is? If your inner entomologist is intrigued, join Aimee Gelinas of the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary for a Canoe Trip and Luncheon at Rainbow Beach. Wander the beach and learn about protecting this endangered insect. This is a unique opportunity to view the rare beetle in its natural habitat. In New England, they call only two locations home; Rainbow Beach in Northampton is one of them.
After lunch and a stroll through the sand, be prepared to paddle. The afternoon ends with a canoe trip up the Connecticut River as Gelinas shares her knowledge of the wildlife and wetland plants of Western Massachusetts. Be sure to check out more of the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, which encompasses forests, marshes, wetlands and five miles of trails.
July 20, $28, pre-registration required, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Rainbow Beach, Northampton, (413) 584-3009, ext. 812, www.massaudubon.org.
