If, after you visit William Sieruta’s exhibit The Grossest Groceries, you find yourself pondering with intrigue a shapely carton of McDonald’s fries, Sieruta’s done his job. In his artist statement about the show he says, “My aim is to question our automatic responses and unrealized prejudices towards a certain group of foods I call the ‘American Diet.'”
Sieruta’s whimsical collages throw together the oddest of elements in pleasant and often funny ways. Perhaps his bright collages are the byproduct of his degree in finance, or perhaps they are flights of hunger-driven fancy. Whatever their genesis, Sieruta’s works surprise and fairly pop off the page with layered iconography from the modern horn of plenty.
