Working with crochet, shoelaces or industrial rubber bands, artist Sheila Pepe crafts installations in response to the space in which she works. She has created installations at various national and international galleries, yet the Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) is one space with which Pepe is quite familiar.
Pepe came to the museum years ago as a security guard and ended up working as an intern in the director’s office, where she worked with staff member Ann Johnson. Her current exhibition at SCMA, Red Hook at Bedford Terrace, was commissioned in honor of Johnson, who retired in 2006 after a long career at the museum. Pepe collaborated with Smith College students, volunteers and museum members to create knitted and crocheted pieces that will be incorporated into the exhibit, along with great lengths of shoelace, yarn and ship’s towline.
