Sick and tired of being enslaved to big oil? Well, friends, you can fight back. In conjunction with Northampton’s Arts Night Out, there looms a parade featuring cyclists, skateboarders, dancers, hula hoopers and more, all capering to the theme of the day: Death of the Combustion Engine. Directed by Jill Turner, the zero-emission, anti-petrocracy corps also includes various movement performers as well as yogis and martial artists. In addition, certified instructor Ralph Sturgen gives a bike safety lesson on quick starts and stops, head turns, hand signals and the like (participants must bring a helmet).
Last but surely not least, the event boasts a soundtrack entitled “Ode to Global Warming,” billed as a minimalist soundscape. It’s rumored that the appropriate dress code is “outrageous black funeral costumes,” so Goth it up and staple some Dick Cheney dolls to the bottoms of your feet, crushing him in effigy even as you poo-poo his addictive product. Ride, Sally, ride.

Sept. 12, 5-8 p.m., downtown Northampton (at City Hall). For more information, email info@jillturner.com.
