The early abstract expressionists sought to create psychic landscapes on canvas, recording the inner self with a free-moving hand grasping a paint-laden brush. The works in Maggie Nowinski’s Frequency Vertebrae similarly seek expression, but of a contemporary self, imprinted with what Nowinski calls “the exploitive practices of consumer culture.” Her recent paintings, drawings and sculpture question the static position of the modern subject—our frequencies so jammed with images, advertisements, products and labels that we inevitably carry their impressions.
Nowinski, a local artist and musician, has established herself in New York, Italy and the Pioneer Valley as fluent in many mediums, incorporating sound and video into her sculpture and installation.
