Anyone who has wistfully thrown a penny into a fountain knows the momentary synthesis of doubt and elation inspired by the simple act of closing your eyes, casting a coin and making a wish. Starting in October, Northampton pedestrians are spared (at least) the doubt, when Lu Stubbs’ “Happy Frog” takes up residence at the corner of Main and Center Streets, awaiting pocket change. The frog will serve as a community, er, piggy bank, accepting both premeditated and spontaneous donations that will go directly to the MANNA Soup Kitchen.
On Shelter Sunday, amid the festivities in Pulaski Park, the Happy Frog arrives in front of First Churches, welcomed by Mayor Mary Clare Higgins and WHMP’s Bill Dwight.
Oct. 5, 12 p.m., free, First Churches, 129 Main St., Northampton, (413) 586-0805.
