Christine Forgey was elected Greenfield's first mayor in June, 2003. Her tenure has been marked by her heavy-handed but so far unsuccessful effort to clear the way for big-box retail development on the French King Highway.

In 2004, in support of a non-binding ballot initiative to rezone land off the French King Highway to make way for a national discount chain, Forgey told local media, "I feel the dire need of Greenfield's citizens for a place to shop affordably is one that cannot be forestalled. I also feel that until this issue is resolved, the debate over growth will continue to be a contentious one. At this time, development of a discount store is clearly the highest and best use of almost any buildable site in town."

Asked by a reporter whether she thought a multinational discount chain would drain money from Greenfield, Forgey said, "I don't have a problem with sending money out to a multinational corporate entity. I really don't."
