This photo just makes my day. If I believed in God I’d say she blessed America. As Anja put it, "And she came in the front door." Amen to that.

The other day an older man from our neighborhood (a new neighborhood, kind of – we moved just around the corner but it’s strangely like we moved miles away) called across the street to Anja and me, “Nice sign,” referring to our homemade O-B-A-M-A letters pictured ina recentpost. His lab and our dogs barked hellos, and then he added, “He made a great speech the other day.” “He sure did,” I replied.

Our neighbor is at least 70, probably Polish-American as nearly all the old folks around us seem to be (we live within yards of Turners’ two Polish clubs) with a vinyl-sided house and a well groomed lawn behind a wire fence, in a largely working-class town with a lot of racial tension. He wanted us to know he broke type, he voted for Barack. He was proud to have done so.

And, yes, for the first time in my life, as a wise and elegant woman once said, I too am proud, proud of my country.
