Remember when everybody was all afraid of the bird flu? I say remain afraid of the bird flu, and get even more afraid of other strains.
If you've noticed a lack of posts for quite a few days running, that's because I have been suffering from what I am convinced is gorilla flu. Is somebody on top of these things? What is this strain of illness going around? Does the CDC know? Should I call them? Where's Charlton Heston when you need him?
I'd heard tales of epic flu this year, seen a few sufferers up close. But nothing prepared me for the changeling flu–started as one thing, became another and another, and is in its final throes as some sort of bronchial apocalypse. I still sound like I've been gargling gasoline. (I haven't, if you're wondering. I only comb my hair with it, like Joe Strummer in Straight to Hell.)
I write not to complain, dear reader, but to inject this question into the conversation: are bacteria and viruses getting wilier? Just how worried should we be? Perhaps this is mere anecdote. I hope so…
