An anonymous tip left this afternoon on my home telephone indicates Northampton at large City Councilor James Dostal has announced he is not going to run for re-election. In his place Ward 4 City Councilor David Narkewicz has announced he will run for the vacated seat. Apparently there was a news conference today on the steps of city hall. I must have missed the memo.

This comes just a few months after Narkewicz indicated he was not going to run for re-election to the Ward 4 seat in order to pursue other interests and to spend more time with his family. This led to the Ward 4 Schwartz candidacy.

Narkewicz will join Jesse Adams and Kathy Silva as the only candidates for the two at large seats. Silva works full time for a correctional facility and Adams runs his own law practice in the city. If elected Narkewicz, who is unemployed save for his council seat, could very well be nominated to serve as the council's next president. He is a natural for the position as the only current councilor schooled in the science of politics. He graduated from UMass with an undergraduate degree in Political Science and, as was said to me several years ago by one of his supporters, is a professional politician.
