About a year ago I had one of my idiot-genius punster moments. Punsters, you know what I’m talking about, when you come up with a bon mot that you think is genius but everyone looks at you like you’re an idiot. (That is until your pun becomes, say, a fantastic art show and then a book about your very own beloved dog. I'm just sayin is all.) This was a visual one – I pictured the “I love NY” image with the heart for the love, of course, and then a pair of Blue-footed Boobies in place of "NY", thus “I love boobies.” Well, my wonderfully indulgent designer wife (er, that there’s a wife who’s a designer, not one of the Stepford variety) went and made a version of “I love boobies” and then made me a tote bag with it on it. And that was pretty much that until one day this spring when I ran into a friend, Liz Gardner (who writes a terrific blog called Flip Side of Forty about her battle with breast cancer, but also about life in general – really great incisive, contemplative writing, check it out) who was in the middle of a training walk, one Saturday, for the three-day, Susan G. Komen for the Cure sixty mile walk for breast cancer research in Boston. Somehow this led me, perhaps inappropriately, to bring up Anja’s and my pun (at this point “I [heart] Boobies” is both of ours – sorry hon!), at which point Liz’s eyes lit up. Her team for the walk was called the Blue-footed Boobies! And thus a partnership was born. I saw Liz yesterday, a couple of weeks after the successful trek. She said the experience was a amazing (read about it on her blog, link above), the booby gear was a hit, and many of the other women and men walking had their own goofy breasteses wordplay. Yay boobies! Get your own set!
