What's the best way to top getting voted Grand Band Slam winner for best new band in 2008? If you're local drummer Bill Nacewicz, the answer is: form another group and win the same award again in 2009. As part of the band God the Robot, Bill and his fellow compatriots in sound (Tim St. John on vocals and guitar, Brian O'Toole on guitar and Dan Egan on bass) combine their years of playing experience and bring their new musical vision to stages across the Pioneer Valley.
First taking shape in 2007, God the Robot had humble beginnings. The band started when Bill was casting about for a new project and ended up spending a lot of time with his friend and former Novella band mate, St. John. The two soon found themselves discussing the possibility of making music together again, and quickly recruited friends Egan and O'Toole.
The Advocate recently caught up with Naciewicz and picked his brain on topics ranging from his favorite breakfast to obscure quotes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Advocate: What town does God the Robot call home?
Bill Nacewicz: Western Mass. will do just fine as we are spread about, and one of us seems to sleep on the couches of unwitting "new friends" until forced to leave, usually involving some form of awkward conversation starting with, "Hey, man, It's been cool having you eat and drink all our stuff, but my girlfriend was just saying…"
Tell us about your biggest "rock 'n' roll moment" in the Valley.
Realizing we were total losers and growing beards. And also the time Brian wore a funny hat to a show. Oh yeah, also the time that we realized we could save money at amusement parks by paying the children's admission for Tim. Also, Eganstock was pretty awesome.
What's the name of the last song you wrote? What is it about?
Most of the songs are about Tim's experiences in grade school. Turns out it was pretty hard on him, and made a lasting impression. One of the songs is about Dan Egan's need to communicate with hurtful words when he really just means "I love you."
Where's your next out-of-town gig?
Still awaiting word to be first moon band. Hopefully on a triple bill with Cher and Daughtry.
What's your biggest complaint about being a musician in the Valley?
We can share our bitchy little feelings over a drink sometime.
What's your favorite thing about being a musician in the Valley?
This is where we come from. All these great bands are in our blood.
Please describe your typical (or favorite) breakfast.
The souls of the weak, or cereal, toast and coffee with fruit.
What is the worst song you've heard in the last six months?
Corporate radio, blah blah blah, disappointed doodily doo, more meaning, less fluff, yadda yadda, state of music and kids today.
What's your beverage of choice?
I like to share tea with my dolls. It's grounding and reminds me where I come from.
What other Valley band (or solo artist) do you like/look up to?
The Uncomfortables because they are just awesome guys. Is that everyone? I feel like we're leaving someone out.
If you could be any musician (alive or dead) other than yourself, who would it be?
I'd like to be a very small musical baby with webbed feet for advanced swimming, laser eyes for obvious reasons and some other power that maybe you could suggest because I am a busy person.
