Autumn is traditionally a time for reflection, and reflection requires examination of what is truly valuable. One undeniable thing of value is life itself, human or otherwise. This weekend, a couple of charities ask that your reflection include some contribution to worthy causes that celebrate life in all its diversities and complexities.

First, there's the Jerri Nielsen-FitzGerald Canter against Cancer trail ride, an event held to benefit a medical scholarship fund named for the doctor who, out of necessity, diagnosed and treated her own breast cancer while on a National Science Foundation mission to the South Pole. There will be special awards, raffle prizes, a pig roast and trail ride (and/or walk or hay wagon ride) on a 140-acre farm in Southampton.

Second, the East Mountain Country Club in Westfield holds a fundraiser for the Westfield Homeless Cat Project just in time for winter, when it's essential to get displaced animals indoors before the harshness of the elements overcomes them. The evening includes food, a 50/50 raffle and music by contemporary country band Gale Country.

Canter Against Cancer: Oct. 3, 10 a.m. (rain date Oct. 10), Twin Orchard Farm, 146 Valley Rd., Southampton, (413) 527-2708.
