Maureen Carney is not new to the Ward One voters of Northampton. She has served as the Ward One City Councilor since WHMP radio talk show host Bill Dwight hand-picked her as his successor several years ago. According to her website she feels she has the experience to ask the hard questions and to make the difficult decisions to move the city forward. She is always civil and this year she faces an electoral challenge from Andrew Vidal-McNair.

According to Vidal-McNair's website, he is running a grassroots campaign. His background includes participating in elective campaigns in various capacities for U.S. Congressman John Olver, D-Amherst. In addition to this Vidal-McNair has previously undertaken several of his own campaigns for elective office in his hometown of North Adams, MA narrowly missing a council seat in 1994 but succeeding in becoming a Democratic State Delegate that same year.
Both candidates are openly gay and Vidal-McNair is married.
