. . . or

I just can't bear to go into all the sicko anti-Muslim fearmongering going on on right-wing radio and tv yesterday and today

I've been having an interesting little Facebook conversation this week after reading one too many Yankee-bashing posts on Fbook (from Mass. pals, sure, but also nationwide).

To wit:

Me:

So many Yankee haters out there. I can see hating George, the power/money structure of baseball, et al, but this bunch of Yankees, barring one or two, just aren't very hateworthy. And for Red Sox fans to complain about the Yanks' trying to buy it? I'm not really a baseball or Yankee fan any more, but I am I complete traitor Celtics fan!!!! (hop on, Sox fans!), and I'm happy for my dad that his team won. So there.

Friend 1:

I don't hate them. I'm not happy that the Phillies lost, but I don't hate the Yankees. Hating is for Massholes.

Friend 2:

I like hating the Yankees in theory, but they're just people like anyone else, and I agree Jamie, they were a little hard to hate as a team this year. If I saw Jeter or Posada walking down the street, I'd be psyched to say hi and give them a handshake and a little razzing in jest. A-Rod on the other hand…I'd probably go get my car and run him down in the street. In jest.

Friend 3:

Further proof, as if it were needed, that being right is over-rated. I'm no fan of Steinbrenner, but he opposed the changes in baseball that made the money go berserk. He said that if free agency came in, everything would be for sale and he'd have no choice but to out spend his competition. Self-serving, probably, but he didn't make moneyball, he just took advantage of it.

Friend 4:

there's really only one team in professional sports: the athletes.

ps: go celtics

Dearest friends 1-4, please feel free to chime in and/or ID yourselves. I thought I'd keep you in witness protection unless you wish otherwise.

As I write this, another pycho mass murder just occurred, in Orlando I think, just heard it on the radio. Not sure why I'm mention this, except that it bizarrely and distressingly (and, well, nicely) bookends this post. If the guy's a WASP, will MSNBC and Air America start screaming for us to round 'em all up and throw 'em in in Guantanamo? Hope so.
