In other news about Vermont Yankee, the Vermont Citizens Action Network has struck on a rather ingenious way to raise money for its efforts to shut down the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor, which sits just north of the Valley, in Vernon, Vt.: a green-tinged raffle.

Through the end of January, VCAN is selling raffle tickets to win a $5,000 home solar panel system.

"All proceeds from the raffle will go to support VCAN's 2010 efforts to close Vermont Yankee and pass strong, renewable energy legislation," according to a press release announcing the fundraiser. Those efforts take on a particular urgency in light of the recent discovery of high levels of radioactive tritium in a test well and a trench at the plant. Tickets for the raffle are $35 each, and only 450 will be sold. They can be purchased at www.vtcitizen.org; at the Greenfield Solar Store (2 Fiske Ave., Greenfield, 413-772-3122); or by calling Joan Sellers at 413-584-3318.
