When it comes to matters environmental, just how ahead of the curve is the Valley?
Two words (or maybe it’s three): composting porta-potty.
Sure, there are plenty of compelling reasons to attend next weekend’s Hilltown Spring Festival: live performances by artists like Charles Neville and The Primate Fiasco, May Pole dancing, a dog-sled demonstration, a kids’ craft festival—not to mention numerous vendors and demonstrations focused on sustainable living, from hybrid cars to solar power to local food.
But let’s face it: you were already hooked at the composting porta-potty.
According to the Hilltown Community Development Corp., the organizer of the event, this is a rather historic toilet, “what is believed to be the first-ever composting porta-potty.” And it will be making its grand debut at the Spring Festival.
The Hilltown Spring Festival takes place on Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cummington Fairgrounds. Full details can be found at www.hilltowncdc.org.
For festivalgoers with a burning desire to know the full details of just how this ground-breaking loo works, details can be found at the website for its manufacturer, Phoenix Composting Toilet, at www.compostingtoilet.com.
And those of you more concerned with the, well, end results can rest assured; as the genteel folks at the Hilltown CDC put it, “A local farmer will provide a long-term home for the compost produced by the porta-potty.”
