The religious flock from whence I sprung sometimes produces such a numbskull the rest of us smack our foreheads in dismay that this is the kind of rot people take as representative of Christianity. And this fellow is a high-ranking fundamentalist nutball.

I give you Bryan Fischer, of the American Family Association. I like my fundies extra crazy, and wow, does he deliver:

…If it’s a choice between grizzlies and humans, the grizzlies have to go. And it’s time.

…God makes it clear in Scripture that deaths of people and livestock at the hands of savage beasts is a sign that the land is under a curse. The tragic thing here is that we are bringing this curse upon ourselves.

He’s lately the subject of a dust-up based on his comments about the “feminization” of the Medal of Honor, recently awarded to a soldier who merely saved other soldiers under fire. He says that soldier dserved his award, but:

…I have noticed a disturbing trend in the awarding of these medals, which few others seem to have recognized.

We have feminized the Medal of Honor.

According to Bill McGurn of the Wall Street Journal, every Medal of Honor awarded during these two conflicts has been awarded for saving life. Not one has been awarded for inflicting casualties on the enemy. Not one.

…So the question is this: when are we going to start awarding the Medal of Honor once again for soldiers who kill people and break things so our families can sleep safely at night?

I would suggest our culture has become so feminized that we have become squeamish at the thought of the valor that is expressed in killing enemy soldiers through acts of bravery.

I’m sure Jesus–you know, the one who threw grenades into Roman pillboxes and screamed “kill! kill!” like Arlo Guthrie–would be proud to be represented so well.

Fischer’s blog is awesome to behold. Enter at your peril. He sets the bar pretty darn high.
