As part of a large-scale project, I’ve been up to my eyeballs lately in stories from veterans. Hearing such stories firsthand, I’ve come to believe, demands leaving politics at the door. Understanding the personal and human experience of war is an endeavor that’s independent of such relatively petty concerns anyway; one’s politics won’t change what has already happened, so it quickly becomes irrelevant.

That said–if you haven’t seen it, Rolling Stone‘s in-depth story of a platoon gone crazy in Afghanistan is extraordinary. It’s best read with politics left at the door, too.
