Following in the grand tradition of Nirvana’s “In Bloom,” Montreal-based indie rockers Plants and Animals have released a retro-themed video for the latest single from their new album The End of That. And much like Cobain and company before them, the finished product gives audiences a privileged glimpse into the band’s little-seen humorous side.
Inspired by a clip of singer Englebert Humperdink performing his song “Quando Quando Quando” on his own television show in the ‘70s, the low-budget parody was filmed using 35-year-old tube cameras to achieve a look similar to the past and was directed by actor/ band friend Joe Cobden.
As for subject matter, the band described the song as “a late-night confessional, a catch up with an old friend over a beer.”
“We went for the straight line in this song, musically and lyrically, as much as we ever have,” the group continues. “It isn’t an end so much as a road stop, really. Basic, naked, celebrating the journey.”

The track is also a perfect distillation of Plants and Animals’ take on “post-classic rock.” Featuring lines about snorting cocaine, sunny female backing vocals and a catchy acoustic strum, the tune is an album highlight. And now with tongue-in-cheek visuals to accompany it, eager fans will keep coming back for repeat viewing/ listening.
