This spring I’ve had a series of new critters visiting Chez Rounds. I, well really some of the animals, have found 3 baby snakes. At this point they are four or five inches long and cute as bugs’ ears (as Grannie Rounds used to say). I’ve rescued one from the clutches of the cat. She was just playing with it. But I’ve allowed Tiny to have her way with the two she’s captured.
Chickens are omnivores. They were domesticated from the red Jungle Fowl of southern Asia and share that birds lack of food fussiness. A pretty minor cut on a chicken can easily be a death sentence as the other chickens perceive the source of protein. They will quite literally peck each other to death.
In the big factory farms they cut off the tip of every hen’s beak to prevent this sort of squabbling. It looks pretty silly, and that’s saying a lot since we’re talking about chickens.
Once Tiny got her snake into the run, the ladies went wild. All the ladies in the house say “snake”!
One especially chased Tiny around hoping for a handout. Or beakout.
But Tiny perservered and finally triumphed.
What a bird.
