With all the hype that surrounded Pavement’s reunion in 2010 and the subsequent release of the latest Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks album Mirror Traffic in 2011, it’s easy to forget that the quintessential ‘90s slacker guru was in another band back in the day.
True, the Silver Jews never reached the height or notoriety of Malkmus’ other projects. But the group wasn’t even really his to begin with. That honor belonged to co-founder Dave Berman, who remained the band’s sole constant member for its entire 20 year existence.
Now fans can see how it all began with the video that accompanies Early Times the recent compilation of the Jews’ EP’s “Dime Map of the Reef” and “The Arizona Record.”

Ah the ‘90s. One can almost feel the VHS tape and imagine the no doubt hulking camcorder that was used to compile such footage. We shan’t see those times again. But in the case of the Silver Jews it’s all been captured for posterity and the sake of the record. Or it was just a bunch of guys hanging out in a small apartment and having some fun by making music.
